I was fortunate enough to sample Kalahari truffles while visiting family in Namibia. These truffles are shaped like regular truffles, but have the texture and taste of mushrooms. They grow in the Kalahari Desert and are a type of fungi. Apparently, these truffles can be sold for US$1200 per kilogram in parts of Europe. In Namibia they can be sourced at a much more reasonable rate; a 25 kilo bag can go for as little as US$4. Our host served us these truffles with fresh fettucini and olive oil. A delicious African twist on a traditional Italian pasta.
