In Search for a Whole Fish Submitted by: lani
Mỹ Tho, Tien Giang, Vietnam

All through our 3 month travels through SE Asia, I was craving the meal that was a whole fish. My partner in crime, Chris, was not. This made it really hard to order when it was just the 2 of us eating together. We had it once in Thailand and it was good, but not exactly what I was really looking for.

We decided to do a moto bike tour down to the Mekong delta. From Ho Chi Min City, there were tons of tours to the delta, but we didn't want to do a tour. We each got our own driver and moto and took off. The trip started fantastic!

Our first main stop was in My Tho, just this little village amidst the winding canals of the delta. We stopped for what became one of the best meals of the entire trip. We shared this meal with our drivers, who of course helped us to order. In Vietnam, they eat rat, bat, pigeon and all kinds of crazy creatures. It was important to have people to help you order exactly what it was you wanted.

So at this restaurant, we ordered the whole fish. Not only was it a whole fish, but they gave you rice paper and all kinds of stuff to roll in it with the fish. I was in heaven! Not only do I love Vietnamese summer rolls, but to get to roll them myself, with the fish & veggies & sauces. It was pure bliss.
