What: Hojaldra can refer to different varieties of pan dulce (in the Yucatán, for example, it’s ham and cheese sandwiched between sugary pastry bread)—some of which are more traditional around el Día de los Muertos. In Oaxaca, this morning treat, popular among hungry market vendors, is a simple sweet bread enlivened by droplets of red-colored sugar.
Where: We spotted a bread vendor selling hojaldra (5p) in Mercado 20 de Noviembre (20 de Noviembre at Rayón, map); other markets carried it as well.
When: Mornings are best for finding/trying hojaldra in Oaxaca’s markets.
