Chelada, suero

A chelada with it's accompanying beer from La Olla in Oaxaca.

What: A beer of your choice is served with lime juice over ice, in a salt-rimmed glass. It has different names in different parts of Mexico: chelada in the Yucatán; suero in Oaxaca, sometimes michelada in Mexico City. However you call it, it’s an extra-refreshing adult beverage, the offspring of a margarita and a cold beer.

Where: Most bars and restaurants will offer this cerveza preparada. We had ours at the wonderful La Olla (Reforma 402) restaurant in Oaxaca, with a Negra Modelo. As with micheladas, we prefer darker beers—what a pretty mix it makes!—although lighter beers are also really good prepared this way. It’s like taking that lime in your Corona to the nth degree.
