Jugos

Aguas frescas or jugos from Jugos Teresita in Oaxaca, Mexico.

What: Jugos are juices: blends of fruits and vegetables. As with aguas frescas, varieties are nearly endless.

Where: Look for jugos at restaurants, cafes, and market stalls. In Oaxaca, we suggest Jugos Teresita (open daily, 7am-4:30pm) in Mercado de la Merced (Insurgentes between Murguía and Morelos, map), as well as Lupita Jugueria in Mercado 20 de Noviembre (20 de Noviembre at Rayón, map), where we tried a papaya-beet blend (13p for small). We highly recommend Vampiro juice wherever you can find it. At Teresita, it’s offered two ways (pictured): sencillo, the “simple” preparation that calls for beets, carrots, and orange (10p); and preparado, which adds parsley, spinach, celery, pineapple, apple, and honey to the mix (17p). The latter result—sweet, thick, and earthy; bursting with freshness—is something we could literally drink every single day, and be healthier for it.
