Paletas

A paleta or ice pop on the street in Oaxaca

What: Paletas are ice pops made from fresh fruit (and more). They’re found all over Mexico in flavors as varied as limón, chocolate, sandía (watermelon), tamarindo, guanábana (soursop), mango or cucumber with chile, and the occasional regional favorite, like Oaxaca’s leche quemada y tuna (pictured)—which is “burnt milk” and tuna, the fruit of the pickly pear cactus. (See also: nieve: leche quemada con tuna.)

Where: In convenience stores or paleta franchises like the national La Michoacana Natural. As mentioned in the Oaxaca section, Paletas Popeye is a popular brand there, its roaming bright-orange mobile carts a constant presence downtown.
