What: This Cuban twist on a ham and cheese sandwich, made of ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, and pickle, is hot-pressed between lightly buttered Cuban bread, giving it a pleasant panino-like crunch. Evidence suggests this toasted sandwich came over from Cuba around the late 1800s, most likely to Key West first, followed by Tampa and Miami.
Where: The diner-like Luis Galindo Latin American Restaurant (305-267-9995; three locations, including 898 SW 57th Ave., map) is a wonderful place for a sandwich. Belly up to the paper mats at the counter and practice your español with the friendly waitresses.
When: Sun-Thurs; 7am-midnight; Fri-Sat, 7am-1am (note that one of the locations, Latin American #2 at 10700 Coral Way, is open 24/7)
Order: The Cubano ($6.50) or the Cubano Especial ($7.50), which is slightly bigger. Also check out their meat dishes, like vaca frita.
Alternatively: Small, no-frills Enriqueta’s Sandwich Shop (305-573-4681; 186 NE 29th St.; map) is another great bet for a good Cuban; just be aware that it closes at 2pm on Saturdays and isn’t open on Sundays.
