My family recently bought a cottage on Torch Lake in Northern Michigan, USA. Just outside Traverse City, this area of the state is booming with exceptional restaurants and local breweries. One of these breweries happens to be my family’s Northern Michigan hangout, Short’s Brewing Company. We go to Short’s Brewing Co. at least once every weekend we’re up north, sometimes more than that. It's that good.
Short’s Brewing Company was established in 2004 by Joe Short. Today there are more than 40 different beers brewed by the Short's crew. With every intention of keeping Short’s Brewery a local, close to home operation, Short’s has began distributing to bars and grocery stores solely in Michigan. This means that the only place you can experience all that Short’s has to offer is in the mitten state. The restaurant and pub is located in Bellaire, Michigan, and offers a one of a kind drinking and dining experience. The first time I stepped into Short’s Brewing Co. I was tremendously impressed. The atmosphere is eccentric, lively, and comforting and the service is some of the friendliest I have ever experienced; you really feel welcomed at Short’s. Paired with the amazing beer and food, this place is nothing short of amazing.
There are 20 brews on tap every day and they’re constantly changing. Personally, I’m a fan of The Soft Parade or Locals Light. These two beers are refreshing, flavorful, and perfect for those of us who prefer a less-hoppy taste. No matter what kind of beer drinker you are, there is something for you. And if you can’t decide, order a sampler flight and find your Short’s favorite!
As far as the food goes, you won’t be disappointed. There are new specials offered every day along with a static menu. The food is packed with mouthwatering flavor; I haven’t found something on the menu I didn’t like. My favorite Short’s meal is definitely their pizza. With an option of over 20 toppings and warm, perfectly baked crust, Short’s pizzas are to die for. The best one I’ve tried is called the She Wanted to Leave, complete with marinara, pesto, mozzarella cheese, chicken, artichokes, spinach, and mushrooms. Enjoying a beer and a good meal at Short’s Brewing Company has become part of my family’s up north tradition. The atmosphere, exceptional service, beer, and food, are unmatched. It is without a doubt the best brewery in Michigan.
