What: Only in Buffalo should you eat this savory, messy sandwich: breaded, fried white-meat chicken fingers coated in a spicy wing sauce, topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and blue cheese, on a six-inch roll. It is, as a local friend advises, best appreciated after a long night of bar-hopping.
Where: Local fast-food institution Jim’s Steakout (multiple locations including 194 Allen St., map) specializes in foods you’d perhaps rather not dwell on the day after. (Actual conversation overheard at counter: Customer: “Will my heart blow up after eating this?” Counterman: “Nah, not a half sandwich. Maybe a whole.”) But in the moment, you’ll enjoy them, we promise. Of its several locations, the Allen Street and Elmwood Avenue (no. 938) branches in particular are conveniently located near a bunch of bars.
When: Daily, 10:30am-5am
Order: “Jim’s Bleu” chicken finger sandwich ($5.49 for six-inch; $9.45 for 12-inch), ordered “hot” if you like some spice. Next time we’ll ask to hold the American cheese, which seemed unnecessary with the more flavorful blue cheese.
