Aside from the calories (we hope) you’ll expend swimming, bodysurfing, and fighting ocean currents (watch those lifeguards!)—plus the aforementioned $10 morning yoga class at the East Deck Motel—here are some more ways to work off a few days of fried fish and beer.

BIKE

Ditch your car for the weekend and rent a bike: You’ll still get everywhere you want to go within 20 minutes and you’ll avoid the hassle of beach parking. Rentals at Montauk Bike Shop (725A Montauk Hwy, map) from $35.99/day; ask the staff about their “secret” maps and routes.

HIKE

The reward from exploring the quiet bush-bordered paths and rugged bluff-top trails of the 99-acre Shadmoor State Park (map; free) is jaw-dropping beach and ocean views. The park also includes two mysterious-looking, concrete WWII-era bunkers and freshwater wetlands.

Among the dense woods, surf fishing, and wildlife spotting of Montauk Point State Park (map; $8 per car) are nature trails with mesmerizing views of the Atlantic’s convergence with the Block Island Sound. Plus, there’s the historic and lovable Montauk Lighthouse, the state’s oldest.

SURF & PADDLE

Learn to surf or stand-up paddleboard—the sport that’s more recently taken over the Ditch Plains waters—with East End Surf (private lessons $125 for 1.5 hours); ladies interested in the full-body benefits of the latter should check out the Paddle Diva (group lessons from $75 per person).
