Chicha

A cup of chicha from La Portal de Chorro in Colombia.

What: A sour-tasting, traditional fermented corn drink with a low amount of alcohol. Perhaps an acquired taste, but something worth a try.

Where: You can find varying forms of chicha all over Colombia, but the bars of La Candelaria are particularly inviting. Try the dark hole-in-the-wall La Portal de Chorro near the foot of the charmingly graffitied alleyway Callejón del Embudo (between Calles 13 & 14).

Order: Una chicha, though you might consider requesting just a small cup of it to see how you like it. Customarily, it’s served in a large hollowed-out coconut shell, with a straw.
