Parrillada (grilled meats, steak)

A parrillada of grilled meats from Andrés Carne de Res in Bogota, Colombia.

What: A carnivore’s dream: grilled steaks and other grilled meats, including chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), pork chops, beef ribs, flank steak, bacon-wrapped prunes, fried cow intestines (chunchullo), and even chicken.

Where: Andrés Carne de Res (Calle 3 No. 11A-56) in the northern suburb of Chía (about 45 minutes north of Bogotá), is worth the hike. It’s part steakhouse (with an epic menu), part kitschy dance club, part palatial resting ground for recycled Colombian curiosities and relics—and all Colombia. Note: This place is really a must for any first-time visitor. But let it be known that the food here is only a fraction of the experience. Come with a group and be prepared to dance.

When: Thurs-Sat, noon-3am; Sun, noon-midnight (or 3am if Monday is a holiday)

Order: Parrillada de la casa (mixed grilled meats, see photo, 82,400 COP; only at Chía location); bife de chorizo (420 grams/14.8 oz. sirloin and rump steak, 48,500 COP). Most mains are accompanied by a side of arepas and stuffed cooked tomatoes.

Good to know: If you don’t have access to a car, nor wish to spring for a taxi from Bogotá, a newer sister restaurant, Andres DC, is located in Bogotá’s Zona Rosa (Calle 82, No. 12-27, map)…but there’s nothing like the original.
