Jugo

A Colombian woman making fresh jugos from La Esquina del Pan de Bono in Cartagena.

What: Also called batidos, these are fresh fruit drinks blended with ice, sugar, and milk or water. These juices are cold, sweet, refreshing, and a great way to sample Colombia’s unusual fruits.

Where: Bakeries, cafes/restaurants, juice stands. (Our photo is from La Esquina del Pan de Bono, at Calle de San Agustin Chiquita & Calle del Porvenir in Cartagena, map.)

Order: Some popular choices include mango, mora (blackberry), piña (pineapple), papaya, banano, the tangy tomate de arbol (tamarillo, or tree tomato), lulo (naranjilla), guanabana (soursop), maracuyá (passionfruit), and zapote (sapote, similar to sapodilla). Many of these, like guanabana, are better mixed with milk than water, so ask when in doubt.
