Beach eats

What: Only in a true beach town like Montauk will a food truck on the sands become a local institution.

Where: The Ditch Witch (no phone), at the entrance to the surfer-centric Ditch Plains beach, has specialized in fresh-tasting wraps, sandwiches, and (Costa Rican) coffee since owner Lili Adams opened shop in 1994.

When: Daily, 8am-4pm (in season)

Order: There’s something special about starting your day with iced coffee ($3) and a small but tasty breakfast burrito ($4)—composed of scrambled egg, cheese, and sausage or ham, plus terrific Costa Rican-style hot sauce on the side—on the beach. It’s equally pleasurable, of course, to make it a beachy lunch of sesame-noodle salad ($8) or a pressed sandwich ($8), like the popular Ditch ’Wich  (pictured)—guac, tomato, greens, and melted shredded cheese on ciabatta bread—or delicious Grant (our favorite: turkey, fresh mozzarella, pesto). Regardless, it’s good food on the sands that won’t make you regret donning a bathing suit...unless you raid their ice cream and candy selection, perhaps.

Alternatively: There’s a hot dog truck at the other, more westerly Ditch Plains entrance (map), should you crave a good old-fashioned dog on the beach. At that same entrance, you will also often find the Montaco truck during the day, with its good but pricey local fish tacos.
